East Midlands Payment Practices Report 2021

12 June 2022•By Alastair Campbell, Founder•Reports

East Midlands Businesses Beat UK Average on Payments, But Some Languish

The Numbers

  • 323 East Midlands companies analysed.
  • Average PaymentCheck Score: 61.0/100.
  • UK average PaymentCheck Score: 50.0/100.
  • East Midlands average is 11.0 points above the national average.
  • Top score: 100/100 (Experian Technology Limited).
  • Lowest score: 8.9/100 (Alstom Engineering and Services Limited).

What Stands Out

The East Midlands is clearly outperforming the rest of the UK when it comes to payment practices, however there's a chasm between the best and worst performers, indicating significant inconsistencies in how businesses in the region handle their invoices. The prominence of Pork Farms in the bottom five suggests potential supply chain payment issues for this specific industry.

Best Payers

These companies demonstrate exemplary payment behaviour, consistently paying suppliers promptly.

  1. EXPERIAN TECHNOLOGY LIMITED - 100/100
  2. CAMBRIDGE & COUNTIES BANK LIMITED - 99.4/100
  3. TRANSFORM TRUST - 99.4/100
  4. TRAVIS PERKINS (PROPERTIES) LIMITED - 99.07/100
  5. PATHFINDER SCHOOLS - 98.8/100

Worst Payers

These companies are lagging far behind, potentially impacting the cash flow and stability of their suppliers.

  1. ALSTOM ENGINEERING AND SERVICES LIMITED - 8.9/100
  2. CEVA LOGISTICS LIMITED - 13.9/100
  3. AMETEK AIRTECHNOLOGY GROUP LIMITED - 15.9/100
  4. PORK FARMS CASPIAN LIMITED - 19.3/100
  5. PORK FARMS LIMITED - 19.6/100

Sector Breakdown

Software and sports companies are the clear leaders, with average scores of 94.1 and 91.7 respectively, while financial services and care services, despite having a relatively high number of companies represented (13 each), are less outstanding at 85.5 and 79.1 respectively. The very small number of companies included in the Software, Sports and Air Travel categories, does mean that any changes to the PaymentCheck Score of those few, can have a dramatic impact on the average for those categories.

While the East Midlands boasts an average PaymentCheck score 11 points higher than the national average, the significant disparity between top and bottom payers (a difference of 91.1 points) reveals that prompt payment is far from universal across the region.
