Environment Payment Practices Report 2021

9 March 2022•By Alastair Campbell, Founder•Reports

UK Environment Sector Pays Suppliers Well Above Average – But the Gap Between Best and Worst Is Stark

The Numbers

  • Companies analysed: 124
  • Average PaymentCheck Score: 63.2/100
  • UK average: 50.0/100
  • Northern Ireland average: 91.3/100 (2 companies)
  • Wales average: 73.9/100 (4 companies)
  • Scotland average: 71.1/100 (11 companies)
  • North West average: 67.1/100 (8 companies)
  • London average: 66.1/100 (23 companies)

What Stands Out

While the environment sector's average PaymentCheck Score is a comfortable 13.2 points above the UK average, the gulf between the best and worst payers shows a significant disparity in how suppliers are treated. The regional data also suggests a postcode lottery regarding payment practices, with Northern Ireland leading the way.

Best Payers

  1. SOUTH DOWNS WASTE SERVICES LIMITED - 100/100
  2. WATER PLUS SELECT LIMITED - 96.5/100
  3. NORTHERN IRELAND WATER LIMITED - 96.2/100
  4. JOHN R ADAM SONS LIMITED - 96.1/100
  5. THALIA WB ODC LIMITED - 96/100

Worst Payers

  1. AUGEAN LIMITED - 24/100
  2. MICK GEORGE EARTHWORKS LIMITED - 25.8/100
  3. ADLER ALLAN LIMITED - 26.75/100
  4. KUHN FARM MACHINERYUKLIMITED - 30.35/100
  5. GU INDULGENT FOODS LIMITED - 30.67/100

Regional Patterns

The numbers suggest that where an environment company is based heavily influences its payment behaviour. While the sample size for Northern Ireland is small (2 companies), their 91.3 average is significantly better than London's 66.1, which is derived from a much larger pool of 23 firms. Scotland and Wales also seem to be doing well compared to the national average.

In conclusion, while the environment sector outperforms the UK average by 26.4%, companies like Augean Limited (24/100) are letting the side down, creating a huge gap compared to South Downs Waste Services Limited's perfect 100/100 score.
