This close alignment between the mean and the median suggests a relatively symmetrical distribution without significant skew from extreme outliers. However, creditors must realise that a standard deviation of 14.3 days indicates a moderate level of variability. Consequently, whilst the central tendency points towards a settlement period of just over five weeks, suppliers should organise their credit control processes to accommodate a fluctuation of roughly two weeks either side of this benchmark.

When we analyse the specific distribution of payment speeds, it becomes evident that the sector does not universally favour rapid settlement. Only 23 companies, representing 28.7% of the sample, fall into the 'Fast' category (0-30 days). The largest cohort sits within the 'Moderate' band (31-45 days), accounting for 40.0% of the organisations analysed. This suggests that a payment cycle extending into the second month is the standard behaviour for a plurality of businesses in this industry. Furthermore, the quartile analysis reinforces this view; whilst the top 25% of performers pay within 30 days, the 75th percentile sits at 49 days. The interquartile range of 19 days highlights the operational gap between the more efficient payers and those that tend to stretch their terms.

Performance breakdowns offer a nuanced perspective on risk. Although 48% of payments are cleared within 30 days, late payments remain a persistent issue, affecting 18.9% of transactions. It is crucial to note that whilst there are no companies in the 'Critical' category (90+ days)—a fact that certainly works in favour of the sector's reputation—there is a non-negligible tail of slower payers. Specifically, 6.3% of companies fall into the 61-90 day bracket, and the slowest payer recorded took 82 days to settle. Conversely, the top performers are exceptionally agile, with the fastest payer settling in just 5 days. This disparity suggests that whilst the sector is generally healthy, specific sub-segments or individual entities struggle with liquidity or administrative efficiency.

Finally, the geographic profile of the sample is heavily weighted towards the south, with London (23 companies) and the South East (13 companies) comprising a significant portion of the dataset. This concentration implies that the observed payment behaviour may be influenced by the commercial practices prevalent in the capital and its surrounding commuter belt. In conclusion, stakeholders amongst the supply chain should expect a median wait of 37 days. However, given that 13.5% of performance metrics indicate payments stretching beyond 60 days, credit managers must remain vigilant. They should analyse individual client history rather than relying solely on the sector average, ensuring they can identify the minority of companies that deviate from the standard payment trajectory.
