Sector Payment Analysis: Recruitment

Our team has completed a rigorous review to analyse the payment behaviour of the Recruitment sector, utilising a dataset of 140 companies. The overarching conclusion drawn from this data suggests a highly robust payment culture, characterised by prompt settlement times that significantly outperform standard UK commercial terms. The central tendency metrics indicate a healthy ecosystem; the average payment time stands at 24.4 days, whilst the median is even lower at 21 days. This discrepancy between the mean and the median suggests a positive skew, indicating that the vast majority of organisations settle their debts rapidly, with the average slightly pulled up by a minority of slower payers. Furthermore, with a standard deviation of 16.2 days, there is a reasonable degree of predictability within the sector, allowing suppliers to forecast cash flow with greater confidence.

A detailed examination of the distribution reveals that the sector is heavily weighted in favour of early settlement. An impressive 75.7% of the companies analysed (106 firms) settle their invoices within the 0-30 day window, which is widely regarded as the gold standard for commercial credit. To visualise the efficiency of this sector, one must look at the quartile data: the 25th percentile stands at just 13 days, meaning a quarter of these companies are paying almost immediately. Even the 75th percentile is recorded at 30 days, demonstrating that three-quarters of the sector operates strictly within standard monthly terms. Amongst the sample, we identified 63 companies—nearly half the dataset—as top performers, settling debts in under 20 days. This level of liquidity suggests that working capital is not a primary constraint for the majority of these businesses.

However, it is crucial to realise that risks remain, particularly regarding the 'long tail' of the distribution. Whilst the majority are prompt, 18.8% of payments are classified as 'late' relative to agreed terms. The distribution analysis highlights a small but distinct group of slow payers: 9.3% fall into the 46-60 day bracket, and 2.1% take between 61 and 90 days. We identified a single critical outlier taking 92 days to pay. Although this represents only 0.7% of the sample, credit controllers must remain vigilant. The interquartile range of 17 days suggests that whilst most fall into a tight cluster of reliability, deviations do occur. Suppliers should organise their credit control procedures to monitor accounts that drift beyond the 45-day mark, as this clearly signals a deviation from the sector norm.

Geographically, the sector's financial activity is heavily centred in London, which accounts for 55 of the 140 companies reviewed. This serves as the primary hub, followed by the North West (18 companies) and the East of England (15 companies). Understanding this regional weighting is essential for benchmarking, as capital-centric businesses often set the prevailing payment culture. In summary, the Recruitment sector presents a low-risk profile for trade credit. The data allows us to generalise that new clients in this vertical are likely to pay within three weeks. Nevertheless, suppliers should not become complacent; effective credit management is still required to mitigate the risks posed by the minority of entities that delay settlement beyond 60 days.
